PRESS RELEASE

TALLULAH BANKHEAD: “THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP” PRESENTED BY FRANCES AND DAVID ROBB

March 21, 2011

Join us on Saturday, April 9, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 for a special lecture and film screening, Tallulah Bankhead: "The Devil and the Deep." Tallulah Bankhead Society members Frances Robb and David Robb will explore the life of this famous Alabama actress, followed by a rare showing of the complete 1932 film.  This free presentation will be held at the Alabama Department of Archives and History.

This lighthearted tribute honors one of Alabama's best known actresses: Tallulah Bankhead. How did Tallulah, born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1902, become TALLULAH, legendary personality? Despite her appearances in more than 50 stage plays, 20 films, and countless radio and television performances, it is her often outrageous personal life and witty one-liners that are legendary and it is her freewheeling Jazz Age personality that still dominates popular memory. Frances and David Robb will explore the life and legends of Tallulah and introduce the audience to this early film. The Devil and the Deep has been described as "a story of perverted love, lies, and lechery," and stars Tallulah along with screen legends Charles Laughton, Cary Grant, and Gary Cooper.

Frances and David Robb are museum and archival consultants, and founding members of the Tallulah Bankhead Society, organized in 1998 in Huntsville.

This presentation is co-sponsored by the Alabama Department of Archives and History and the Southern Literary Trail, and made possible by a grant from the Alabama Humanities Foundation, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities.  For more information, call (334) 353-4726.
